Throw a party and win souls!
Major James Gingrich wrote about their Family Festival – a big block party held on a Saturday from 12:00 to 3:00 PM. They had the traditional children’s games and food, but the innovative idea was to include a free yard sale as well, since that would draw a different group of people to the Army building. He writes that, “I was overwhelmed that we had just over 1200 at our Festival - I had the chance to preach a salvation message at 3:00 and there were over 120 people that stepped up to commit their lives to Christ who weren't part of a church family already. About 90 of them felt comfortable enough to share with us their names and addresses so we can follow up with them over the course of the next 2 weeks.” There were new families at the Corps on Sunday, new kids at their SONday’sCOOL and new members of God’s kingdom. If you try this in your community, your soldiers could wear buttons that say “Ask me about God’s Yard Sale!” and they could share that God redeems people that others think have little value. |

The Language of Hospitality
The words we use can make a significant difference in our attitude towards people outside our church fellowship. When we call people “visitors”, we imply that someone is an outsider who we do not expect to stay too long. In the city, visitor parking is timed, at sporting events the visitor gets the poorest seats, and we rarely allow uninvited visitors inside our home. However, “guests” are welcome! When we invite them home for dinner, we want them to come in and stay for a while. We give them our finest hospitality and we are honored to have them in our home. People who come to The Salvation Army are the honored guests of Christ who deserve our best hospitality. Why not start replacing the word “visitor” with the word “guest” in all we say and do. |

Neighborhood Pet Show
You can run a neighborhood kids pet show as a means of attracting families to your corps building. Send out publicity that describes it as a fun, no competition kind of show. Arrange for owner/pet photos that will be delivered to their homes so you can get mailing addresses. Announce the categories (best trick, best behaved, best dressed pet, pet that looks most like its owner, etc.), introduce pets and their owners, and give prizes – cans of pet food for the pets and certificates for the owners. Don’t forget to have refreshments for everyone and a good registration form. Send me a digital photo of the pet who looks most like its owner and I will include it in a future edition! |

WIIFM
Rick Warren has said that everyone is always listening to the same radio station in their head – WIIFM, “What’s In It For Me?” He believes that preachers should always apply the sermon to the daily lives of their people, and he often gives “homework” in his message. Recently, one pastor preached on evangelism and asked his people to put the names of five people they knew who were not saved on two 3”X 5” index cards. They were asked to give one card to the church for prayer support, and encouraged everyone to bring those five people to church within the next year. They were called “The High Five” and more disciples were added to their church membership that year than ever before. |

VIDEOS:
The evangelistic tool of the year!
The film, “The Passion of the Christ”, has become the most watched motion picture of all time and has been voted by Outreach Magazine to be the most effective evangelistic tool of the year. It is still attracting the unsaved people of our communities to churches that offer a free large screen viewing. Churches are passing out tickets in their neighborhood, advertising in local media and providing free child care in their building during the film. A coffee fellowship after the film will allow openings for people to express interest in knowing more about Jesus. This movie could be shown even as an introduction to Advent. (“See His gift before you celebrate His birthday.”)
